II. Problem's description:
|
ActiveX has long been a security headache for Microsoft. ActiveX controls are programs
that execute on your computer, the same as running an .exe file. ActiveX controls
can delete files, steal your personal info and produce many other surprises.
What you need to invoke an ActiveX control? It's simple: open
Internet Explorer
and visit MSN or CNN. OK, OK, both websites are well-known and don't use any harmful
ActiveX controls. But what about XYZ company or ABCD store? You just visit some
web page and an ActiveX invoked. Accepting ActiveX is an easy way to get spyware
installed on your system.
You can manage (Disable/Prompt/Enable) ActiveX controls in the Internet Explorer
settings:
|
1. |
Restrict ActiveX by setting Internet Explorer so that it will ask your permission
to activate ActiveX should a website make a request. In that case you should
make sure to yourself whether or not that website is regarded by you as "safe".
Only then should you accept the activation of ActiveX for that particular website. |
|
2. |
Disable Active X controls at all, but get an OK popup to inform you that
ActiveX didn't activate for this website:
"Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page.
As a result, the page may not display correctly."
|
"Disable" is equal to "Prohibit" or "Blocked". "Ask" is equal to "Prompt". By the
way: A new security feature of SP2 is that ActiveX controls in the Microsoft Internet
Explorer are blocked by default settings.
 |
|
Disable ActiveX controls at all, but run TakeReal® Autocloser. |
 |
Results:
1. I get extremely high security settings.
2. Popups like "Your current security settings prohibit running..." will be closed
automatically.
